Description:

Tibet, the textiles 17th c. and later
155 x 75 cm
This hanging served as a decorative beam hanging, consisting of drooping, overlapping, tongue-shaped bands. The bands alternate in two colors, dark blue and light orange. The patterns vary between kite, cloud and rain motifs. The upper finial is a wide transverse band of vermilion patterned brocade, with an "imperial yellow" insert with the motif of a dragon playing with a pearl. Between the ends of the ribbons and the wide brocade ribbon is inserted a narrow yellow ribbon, with the classic rain-and-cloud pattern. Various brocades and two textile fragments.
Important German private collection, collected in the 1970s and 80s, mostly acquired at Schoettle Ostasiatica, Stuttgart
