Description:

Thailand, late 19th to first half of 20th ct.
39 x 208 cm (54,5 x 223 cm R.)
Pigments on wood, original frame. The princely family, Vessantara and his wife Madri with the two children Jali and Kanha in their exile in the forest near the mountain Vamka on the run from Jujaka. There, they encounter wild animals, such as the tiger and the deer. The selfless life of this prince and his family leads to rebirth as a Bodhisattva. Pictures of this kind hung in the temple as illustrations. Presumably this one is from a series.
Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia, collected in the 1970s - Traces of use, minor damage to the painting layer, somewhat darkened
