A RARE AND FINE SILK EMBROIDERED COURTLY COLLAR (PILING) WITH RUNNING DRAGONS

Black silk embroidered with colored silk floss in satin stitch and gold threads. Border: Silk woven with gilded paper stripes. Closure with spherical button in gilded bronze. Lining: Orange-red silk woven with clouds in gold. A flaming pearl is flanked by two five-clawed dragons hoovering between five-colored clouds and red bats. Along the back edge, a band of waves with floating pearls and treasure ornaments. Golden silk with woven patterns of large flowers over waves is applied as a border. The back is lined with orange-red silk woven with stylized clouds and flowers in gilded paper strips. This collar (piling) belongs to the courtly garb (chaofu) of ladies and gentlemen. The design indicates the high rank of the wearer.
