Description:

Gujarat or Rajasthan, ca. 1900-50
180 x 180 cm
The fine fabric painting traces the most important components of the two and a half continents (Sanskrit: aḍhāīdvīpa) in excellent painting style and great accuracy. In addition to the accurate drawing, the careful inscription should also be emphasised. The different zones of the circular central continent of Jambudvīpa are easily distinguished by different colours, and the same applies to the ring continents, which are marked by yellow or blue-grey colouring. The oceans running between the ring-shaped land masses are painted black. This fabric painting was probably created as a print for a publication on Jain cosmology. An inscription in the lower right corner indicates the library of a Pandit Vraj(?) Kishore as the place of production or storage.
From an important private collection in northern Germany, collected mainly in India from the early 1950s until the 1980s
