Description:
Japan, Edo periodJe P. 162 x 60,5 cm
Originally the left screen of a pair of six panel screens. Ink, strong colours and silver leaf on paper. Unusual and very distinctive is the restriction of the depiction to three sections, which are released by the silver cloud bands covering all the rest: the first scene - according to the sequence of the picture from right to left - shows court ladies enjoying a bird, whose cage they have placed close to the surrounding veranda (engawa). The second scene groups courtiers with pages in the opposite chambers. Both sections of the picture are connected by the line of sight of Genji and Murasaki, who are trying to reach each other across the garden. The third cloud hole reveals only two hills. The rather cold use of colour is found in some works by later Tosa artists; fine line work on faces and figures, as well as the delicacy of the painterly design of the robes or even the inconspicuous section of nature at the bottom of the second panel, as well as the ink-painted screen in the court scene, speak for a well-known artist of the Tosa school.
Property from a South German noble family - Minor damages due to age, minor old rest.
