A descendent of a family of scholars and painters from Anhui Huang Binhong was one of the last true literati painters in Chinese painting history and developed his style out of his lifetime study of Chinese painting and culture. In contrast to painters advocating the adoption of principals of Western painting, he solely used the traditional techniques of brush and ink to create a unique, modern style of vigorous, expressive brushwork. He never sought naturalism but expression of feeling and personality. In this landscape he used dark, coarse brushstrokes and dots broadly rendering the rocks and mountains without giving any fine details. In his last ten years from 1945 to 1955 his paintings got very dark and dense achieving an almost abstract quality. This work is done earlier, maybe around 1940.
Property from an old Berlin private collection, bought by the father of the present owner in the 1960's - Minor traces of age.
