Old German aristocratic property, in the family since the 19th century, Rimburg Castle near Aachen. The large-format version of this painting is today in the Museum Catharijnenconvent, Utrecht. There must have been a slightly different variant of this, however, which has been passed down through a copper engraving by Cornelis Danckerts (1604-1656) and which the present painting follows.
