A carved limewood figure of a seated Pope. Carved with deeply hollowed back, remnants of polychromy, cracks, losses, rest.
German Private Collection. With Christie's London, auction 4. Nov. 2010, lot 122.
Based on a few stylistic comparisons, the linden wood figure of a seated pope at hand, can be assigned to the heyday of Nuremberg sculpture at the beginning of the 16th century. The sculptor of this pope, with his characteristic, exaggerated, wrinkled face, the tightly curled beard and the large arched robe, oriented himself strongly to the works of Veit Stoss. He shows influences of the figures of Saint Andrew and a Sorrowful Mother in the St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg.
