German private collection. The painting is based in reverse on the Dijon model painted by Albrecht Bouts around 1494 (Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. no. D1948-1-P). In relation to the prototype, the crown of thorns is simplified, Christ's cloak is wider open over the upper body and isolated drops of blood run down the neck. Two other inverted versions of the original can be found in the Leffe Abbey in Dinant and in a private collection in Luxembourg. Cf. Peter van den Brink (Ed.), Blut und Tränen.
