Such masks are still used today in Bhutan for the chama dance. The cham dance involves danced rituals in which deities and actors appear to instruct the audience about the meanings of the figures portrayed and to entertain them. The present mask has five stylized skulls on its forehead, as a reference to the five mental poisons that can be overcome by the wisdoms of the Five Tathagatas. She also has three angrily protruding eyes, and her mouth is most angrily open, showing two protruding fangs. Her facial hair, gilded here, is fierily blazing. Canvas, pigments, varnish.
