Pumpkins and Blue Bird. Ink and colors on paper. Dated 1953. Silk mounting. Inscription and signature by the artist: “In the autumn of the guisi year (1953), Shao’ang in Hongkong”. One seal of the artist: “Shao’ang …”.
Zhao Shao’ang was a disciple of Gao Qifeng (1889-1933), one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Chinese painting. Zhao Shao’ang established his own art school in Guangzhou , calling it the Lingnan Art Studio. Later he taught at Guangzhou University and in Hong Kong. The subjects of his paintings are mainly birds, insects and plants which he sketched from life in an expressive yet naturalistic style
