An illustration of Tibetan paintings preceding an overview of the historical, artistic, literary and religious development of Tibetan culture. With an article by P. Pelliot on a Mongol edict, translation of historical documents and an appendix on pre-Buddhist ideas of Tibet. Giuseppe Tucci (1894-1984) was an Italian Orientalist, Indologist and East Asian scholar who specialised in Tibetan culture and the history of Buddhism. He mastered several European languages, Sanskrit, Bengali, Pali, Prakrit, Chinese and Tibetan, and is considered one of the founders of the field of Buddhism.
