A RARE BRONZE VESSEL 'HU'

Estimated Value:

2.000 € - 3.000 €

Schätzpreis:

15.000 €

Description:

China, Eastern Zhou dynasty
H. 22,5 cm
This rare, almost spherical and classically austere-looking vessel rests on a widely flared foot that is vertically set off on the outside by a surrounding rim. The neck is also widely flared and canted in striking symmetry to the foot. The decoration of the body of the vessel consists of three horizontal bands, geometrically patterned in different ways, the central one clearly raised and set off from the other two by a recessed ring each. These two bands show archaic dragon and cloud shapes, while the central, slightly wider band has a double zigzag line with unclassifiable filler elements.
Important Austrian private collection, according to records acquired in the 1980s from an old Viennese private collection
