China, Eastern Zhou dynasty

The beautifully modeled animal, its flanks engraved with raised, rather than, as was often the case at the time not only engraved cloud and spiral motifs, as was often the case at that time. The animal looks backwards over its somewhat curved back, the tail is curled up. Presumably, such pieces served as handles of vessels or other devices.
