China, late Qing dynasty
ca. 250 x 250 cm
Off-white silk, embroidered with gold threads and silk floss. Lined with green silk, with a thin wadding. Fringes. Between twigs of flowering plums and peonies with chrysanthemums and lilies different birds like Mandarin ducks and herons and insects like grasshoppers, praying mantis, and butterflies. In the center an embroidered inscription of five characters, which might be read phonetically only: Bei Ye Lei Ke Di.
