Scholar’s Recluse in Rough Mountains. hanging scroll, ink and colors on paper. Inscription and signature by the artist: Seven word poem. “In the jiazi year (1984), Xu Bangda.” Two seals of the artist: “Xu Bangda yin” etc.
From a European private collection, acquired before 2007
Xu Bangda was from Haining in Zhejiang province. He moved to Shanghai where he became the pupil of the famous collector and art connoisseur Wu Hufan (1894-1968). There he was active as connoisseur and painter and became himself one of the foremost experts on the history of Chinese painting and one of the leading connoisseurs. After 1949 he was member of a team to bring together a national collection of paintings for the Palace Museum in Peking to replace the collection which Chiang Kai-shek had carried off to Taiwan. After political trouble in the Cultural Revolution he again joined the research staff of the Palace Museum and published important research work on the authentication of Chinese paintings
