Lady in a Boat. Hanging scroll, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: “At the end of the guichou year (1973), Cai Heting.” Two seals of the artist: “Heting”, “Cai”.
According to the owners, from a private collection in Hesse, collected between 1970 and 2015
Cai Heting, style name Yiyuan, was from Fuzhou in Fujian province. In the 1930s he studied painting in Shanghai and was member of the Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Association (Shanghai shuhua hui). In the 1950s he moved to Xi’an where he founded the Association for the Research of Chinese Painting (Guohua yanjiuhui). He painted figures in Western style realism into Chinese style landscapes, like herd boys with buffaloes and ladies, as in this scroll. He also did paintings of tigers in a realistic style.
