Hayashi Kodenji I (1831-1915) was one of the pioneers of arts and crafts in the early Meiji period. From his studios in Nagoya, Kodenji was instrumental in making his work accessible to a wider public. Already at the Paris exhibitions of 1867 and 1878 and in Vienna in 1873, Japanese cloisonné enamels generated great interest and won medals, and Hayashi was followed by the other famous makers such as Namikawa Yasayuki and Namikawa Sosuke. The trio won numerous gold medals at the various exhibitions of the time, with the two Namikawa artists, who were at the forefront of the development of new enamel colours and wireless techniques, finally being rewarded with the highest possible award as artists of the imperial household (Teishitsu Gigei- in) in 1896 - Slightly chipped, very small losses to enamel, rest.
