Wu Guanzhong, style name Tu, was from Yixing in Jiangsu province. From 1938 to 1942 he studied at the National Hangzhou Art Academy under Pan Tianshou (1897-1971) and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), partly in wartime exile in Sichuan province. In 1947 he went to France to study oil painting in Paris. 1950 he returned to China and taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, 1955-1964 he taught oil painting in Peking Fine Art Normal College and afterwards became professor at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in Peking. Working in both oils and ink, he developed a unique, semiabstract style in blending Chinese and Western painting techniques. This virtuoso drawing of a female act may be an earlier work by him inspired by his study in Paris.
