Inscription on the outside of the hanging scroll: Kachô no ga (flowers and bird picture) Yamada Kyûjô hitsu, Chôjuji takaramono (preciousness from Chôjuji temple), followed by 12 characters which are difficult to read and probably refer to a restoration of the painting.
From a German private collection, acquired before 2007
Yamada Kyūjō was a Nanga painter, born in Owari Province. He was a pupil of Sō Shiseki and painted landscapes, birds and other animals after Chinese models. This scroll is also a Japanese interpretation of a Chinese Zhe School style bird and flower painting. - Minor damages and restorations
