The goldsmiths of Baule are famous for their pendants in the shape of human faces. Rarely, however, was this gold jewellery worn as necklaces or attached on swords, as its essential role as part of a sacred family treasure, was invisible. These jewels were kept for generations, as they were considered as a symbol of family cohesion. Only on special occasions, such as funerals and weddings, these pendants were on display or worn.
