The imprinting of the hands and especially the feet of gods and saints is common in the religious practice of Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike. In Hindu traditions, it is mainly the imprints of the hands (Sanskrit: hastakārayantra) and feet (Sanskrit: viṣṇupada) of the god Viṣṇu that are depicted in painting. Auspicious symbols associated with the deity are depicted on the back of the hand or the sole of the foot.
From an important northern German private collection, collected mainly in India from the early 1950s to the 1980s
