China. Qing dynasty, 18th/19th ct.93 x 33 cm, R.
Cream colored silk painted with pigments and opaque white, embroidered with colored silk in satin stitch. The two pictures show a young couple surrounded by servants and a company of young ladies in a garden landscape, respectively. Presumably the scenes stem from the famous novel "the Dream of the Red Chamber".
The pictures combine fine painting with embroidered parts excellently. The makers have managed to connect the scenes in diagonal sequences and structure them by the rich vegetation.
