White Robed Guanyin. Hanging Scroll, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: „In the tenth month (mengdong) of the twenty fourth year of the Daoguang period (1844), a jiachen year, painted … Liu Yongzhi“. Three seals of the artist: “Painting seal of Yanchong” (Yanchong hua yin), “Yongzhi” etc.

Liu Yanchong, style name Yongzhi, was from Liangshan in Sichuan province. He lived in Suzhou and painted landscapes, figures and flowers. He was also good in copying old masters. A handscroll by him after old masters, dated 1843, is kept in the Palace Museum in Peking. Here the Bodhisattva Guanyin is depicted sitting in a white robe on a rock of the Potalaka Mountain and the boy pilgrim Sudhana seeking enlightment from him.
