Berry Shrub with Ducks and Birds. Ink and colors on paper, mounted as hanging scroll. Signature: “Painted by the Officer of the Imperial Guard (Jinyi zhihui) of the Wenhua Hall, Lü Ji .” Two seals of the artist: “Leyu”, „Seal of Lü Ji” (Lü Ji zhi yin).
From a European private collection, acquired prior to 1990
Lü Ji, style name Leyu, was from Ningpo in Zhejiang province. He entered the painting academy of the Ming dynasty and became the leading master of flower and bird painting in the Hongzhi period (1488-1506). As such he was promoted to commander in the Imperial Guards. His paintings are done in the detailed and decorative academic style with rich coloration
