Extensive panorama landscape with staffage figures. Oil/panel, inscribed J Wijnants (in ligature) by a later hand.
Ferdinand III Mülhens Collection, Cologne.
Expert reports: Max Friedländer, Berlin 1929; Eduard Plietzsch, 1954. Not in Klaus Eisele, Jan Wijnants (1631/32-1684): ein niederländischer Maler der Ideallandschaft im Goldenen Jahrhundert. Mit umfangreichem Oeuvrekatalog, Stuttgart, 2000.
Both expert reports, from 1929 and 1954, still identify the painting as an exceptional, charming and excellent work by Jan Wijnants (1631 - 1684). Dr. Klaus Eisele, who saw the work in original in 2023 and whom we thank for valuable advice, doubts the authorship of Wijnants and assigns the (still appealing) landscape rather in the circle of Jan Vermeer van Haarlem. The famous Haarlem landscapists Salomon van Ruisdael, Jacob Isaaksz van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen may also have strongly influenced Jan Vermeer, who was a generation younger.
