132 x 74 x 36 cm
Walnut, walnut burl, maple burl, partially ebonised. A spring-loaded drawer with concealed release in the foot section. High oval writing section, a flap at the retracted point, a semi-circular flap above, which opens upwards and can be pushed in. Centre desk section can be pulled out as a drawer with hinged front and four small inner drawers. Above this, a further, semi-circular writing surface in front of a cabinet consisting of a central, mirrored compartment with column decoration, flanked by eight tapering drawers. The base is removable - it conceals a secret compartment - and is decorated with fine ink painting: a central medallion with a pillar stone, inscribed ‘Opfer der Freundschaft’ (Sacrifice of Friendship) below inscribed ‘Herman(n)stadt’ and ‘Leydenburg’, above a monogram JS. The coat of arms of Transylvania with an eagle is depicted in the gable field under the drawer, above it an inscription band with the date 1816. On the reverse of the central writing panel dated ‘1816’ and monogrammed ‘I.S.’. Some restorations and additions. Damages due to age.
