Description:

L. 73 cm, B. 120 cm
Blue silk gauze embroidered with dyed silk in counted stitches and gold threads in appliqué work. Bordered with gold brocade ribbons. Four filigree openwork bronze buttons with gilding. The golden dragons float among clouds, red bats and numerous treasures above waves and stylized rocks. The high quality of materials and embroidery confirms that this robe was made for the son of a family of high standing. Typical for boys robes are the central slits.

It is very rare to find formal court robes made for a child, as only sons from high ranking families were occassionally allowed the privilege of attending court. See a similar robe sold at Christie’s Hongkong, 5.11.2019, lot 227. For an imperial twelve sym bol child’s robe made for the Guangxu emperor see Christie’s Hongkong, 3.12.2008, lot 2260.
