China, 18th/19th c.H. ca. 28 cm
The pot-bellied Shoul Lao is seated on his caparisoned mule, his left hand holding the reins, the right the bag, wearing garment loosely draped around his prominent belly, his puffy face displaying a laughing expression with slit eyes below bushy eyebrows and bald head; and Lao Tze is seated as well on his caparisoned mule, his right hand holding the reins while the left grasping his large hat, wearing mantle, his face displaying a severe expression with slit eyes, beard and mustache and his head topped with a hat, both on sculpted wood stands.
