Description:
Tibet, 19th c.55 x 39,5 (110 x 80) cm
Four of the 16 great arhats are depicted on this precious thanka. At the very top of the Ser-thang - as a thanka painted on a golden background is called in Tibetan - we recognise Tsepame, the Buddha of long life. At the top right sits the arhat Ser-be-u, who bears the name Golden Calf. He was given this strange name because at the moment of his birth, a cow on his parents' farm gave birth to a golden calf. At the top left is Dorje-mö-hül, an arhat from Sri Lanka. At the bottom right is the venerable Ser-chen-chog, and to his left is Sangpo, the holy one. The figures of Thanka are painted with fine brushstrokes on the golden background. Brocade mounting,
Old German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1984, this thangka was acquired from Koller Zürich, 28.5.1980, lot 375- Traces of age, wear and stained
