Description:
Bhutan, 18th c.75 x 55 (140 x 90) cm
Shab-drung-ngag-dbang-rnam-rgyal, who became the first king of Bhutan and founder of the southern 'Brug-pa school at the beginning of the 17th century. He sits on a lotus throne and holds his hands raised in the dharmacakra-mudrâ (turning the wheel of teaching) in front of his chest. He wears the hat and long beard characteristic of this school. At his sides two monks with dharmacakra and Reisman-dala. Numerous deities and saints of the Lamaist pantheon are spread across the picture surface, with the red Buddha Amitâbha at the top of the picture. Coloured painting on canvas, mounted with brocade fabric.
An old German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1984, this thangka was acquired at Lempertz Cologne, 11.6.1985, lot 944 - Wear, very minor damages due to age
