Three monkeys on a tree by a rock. Ink and light colors on paper, mounted and framed under glass. Signed lower right: freely painted by Chuanshan Zhang Wentao. Two artist's seals: "Zhang Wentao", "Chuanshan".
From an old European collection, assembled before 1990 - Traces of age, creasing, partially damaged and repaired
Zhang Wentao (1764-1814), courtesy name Zhongye and pseudonym Chuanshan, came from Suining, Sichuan. He was an outstanding poet, poetry critic, calligrapher and painter in the Qing Dynasty. Known for his monkey paintings, he also called himself the "Old Monkey of Shushan"
