Description:
China, ca. 15th/16th c.39 x 30 (58,5-62,5 x 44,6) cm R.
Framed under glass, ink and colors on silk. A scholar has fallen asleep at his desk under a full moon and is dreaming of a phoenix that has come to bring him a happy message. Next to him, a red plaque reads “Nightly dream of happiness”. On the table is the open book he has been reading, incense is rising from a censer and a candle is burning. A servant has just brought a new book and seems reluctant to disturb him during his nap. Clouds of happiness surround the roof of the study and bamboo and banana trees characterize the scholar's garden. With its genre-like subject matter, architectural structure and decorative coloring, the painting is a typical product of a professional painting workshop whose tradition dates back to the Song period (960-1279). However, it was probably created in the Ming period (1368-1644).
