China, Qing dynasty, 19th c.
155 x 69.5 cm (173 x 85 cm R.)
Ink and colours on paper, hanging scroll format, framed under glass. A pair of mandarin ducks is shown between pink flowering lotus. Other water plants such as yellow flowering floating heart water lilies. A few insects fly between the lotus leaves. The depiction symbolises a happy, harmonious marriage through the birds, but also the lotus and the pair of insects. Top left a signature and two seals.
