Max Müller (1867-1960), German consul in Hankow, collected in China between 1905 and 1912. By descent to his daughter Irmgard Müller-Doertenbach (1909-2011), according to tradition acquired from a palace eunuch in Beijing
Compare a very similar painted saucer preserved in the collection of the Palace Museum Beijing published ‚Gems of Beijing Cultural Relics Series‘ Works of Decorative Arts II, no. 159, p. 182 and another saucer published ‚Snuff Bottles - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum‘, Hongkong 2003, no. 178, p. 125. A blue enamel Qianlong brushwasher from the Palace Museum Collection is published ‚Scholar’s Paraphernalia - Classics of the Forbidden City‘, 2009, no. 159, p. 158 - Beautifully preserved except for the erased mark on the base
