Description:
Tibet, around 170086 x 63,5 (155 x 100) cm
In the centre, the Bon deity gSen-rab rnam-par rgyal-po is enthroned with the typical gesture of the right hand raised in greeting, surrounded by an aureole of rays and a nimbus, supported by a lotus flower on an ornate pedestal, in front of which the so-called royal symbols (nor-bu chab-bdun) are presented as offerings. The canopy-like background is formed by a temple with three stepped roofs, around each of whose pillars a dragon and a lion are coiled, while Makaras and Garuda hover above their heads. The five Bon-Tathägata are depicted on the centre line directly above and in the top row of the thangka, with the animal symbols for the four cardinal points between them (here a yak instead of the löwen). In the upper left corner of the picture is the armoured Vaisravana. In the upper right corner of the picture is a Svastika-Sattva, both surrounded by adorants. Further svastika (gyun-drung) sattvas and adorants are depicted to the right and left of the central figure, four standing monks next to the altar table. Four manifestations of the Bon-po-Yidam Me-ri dbal-e'en ge-k'od in the same aspect, each with nine köpfen (eight of which are animal köpfe) and eighteen arms, delimit the lower picture sphere. The central motif in the lower area is formed by the figures of a lama and a layman, perhaps the donor, üabove the depiction of a wrathful eight-armed Bon protective deity flanked by four animal-headed "Torhüternüters". The yellow Nagaraja (Dun-skyon) is enthroned in the lower right corner of the picture surrounded by homage-paying Nägas and the blue Nagarãja (mTha'-yas) in the left corner. Coloured painting on thin, probably ritually used cloth, the panels of which were sewn together vertically and then mounted on a firmer backing, with some fine preliminary drawings visible.
An old German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1984, this thangka was acquired at Lempertz in Köln, 13.6.1986, lot 784 - Wear, minor damages due to age
