61 x 42 (130 x 73) cm
Sitting on a lotus in a visionary cloud in front of a rainbow aura, his hands raised in a teaching gesture in front of his chest, the sword of knowledge and the book of transcendent wisdom on two lotus leaves on his shoulders. He is flanked by his two disciples rGyal-ts'ab-rje and mKhas-grub-rje. In front of the Löwenthron a table with offerings. In the upper picture field Buddha Maitreya in a heavenly palace, on the left the Indian master Atisha, on the right Tsong-kha-pa. At the lower edge of the picture, on the left the protective deities Yama and Yami on a bull, on the right dPal-Idan IHa-mo in her lovely appearance with a standard and a bowl of jewels, in the centre a table with the offering of the five senses and the eight Buddhist symbols of salvation. Coloured painting on canvas, mounted with brocade.
An old German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1984, this thangka was acquired at Lempertz Köln, on 27 November 1985, lot 776, publ. plate 34 - Traces of age, wear
