Description:

Tibet, 19th c.
62 x 47 (105 x 76) cm
The thangka represents Amoghapasha as a bodhisattva with three heads and four arms. He wears a Buddha crown, has a third eye on his forehead on each of the three faces and a gazelle skin over his left shoulder. The three Buddhas of the 'three times' appear as small icons above the crown, symbolising the timeless presence of the Bodhisattva throughout all his voluntary incarnations. In the two hands on the right side are a trident and a lotus as attributes. The first left hand is raised and in the second left hand he holds a rope.
Old German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1984, this thangka was acquired at Koller Zürich, 26.5.1981, catalogue 45/3, lot 37
Representations of the Bodhisattva Amogha-pasha are relatively rare in Tibet, especially in this four-armed form« (barrel). This thanka is described under no. 42 and illustrated full-page in D. I. Lauf, Eine Ikonographie des tibetischen Buddhismus - Wear, very minor damages due to age
