China. Qing dynasty. second half of the 19th c.

Silk damask in violet with a green pattern. Trimming: silk satin (creamy white), embroidery: silk (colored), satin stitch, partly wadded for fine relief; gold thread in appliqué technique. Appliquéd woven ribbons with butterflies. Edging and knott buttons: black silk satin. The damask woven with small flower medallions from peonies, chrysanthemums, plums, lilies, lotuses and orchids with bats flying between them. The background pattern consists of linked swastikas. In the wide trimming, numerous people in a detailed garden landscape. The women's robe (chin. ao) with a short stand-up collar is made for everyday wear and was combined with a skirt (chin. qun) over pants. As it is sewn without a lining, it was intended for the warmer seasons.
