Description:

Japan, Meiji Period, late 19th c.
H. 160 cm
Cast in the shape of an urn with a continuous relief decoration of a phoenix and a coiling dragon, surmounted by a sculptural dragon resting on a stylized rock formation. The elaborately designed lid serves purely decorative purposes and cannot be opened. The urn was supported by a stand in the form of a large, coiling dragon holding a tâmâ in its right claw.
Acquired by Bayer AG from Bernheimer by Carl Duisberg prior to 1930 - Partial age damage and surface change due to many years of presentation in the park.
