Collection Klaus Nierhoff (1926 - 2011), acquired before 2007
In a beautifully laid out literary garden, groups of scholars are shown discussing, playing the zither or contemplating the blossoming flowers. One of the guests has a sprig of flowers tucked into his hair. The picture shows the typical style of Lan Ying, who is regarded as the last representative of the professional and decorative Zhe school. The blue-green mountains and rocks quote the archaising style of Zhao Lingran, who is named as a model in the signature; the figures are executed in the careful, delicate style of the late Ming period - Traces of age, minor rest.
