Female nude. Ink drawing on cardboard paper, signature of the artist: "Yu (Chinese), Sanyu". Framed under glass, frame verso with a label from Seidenberg Gallery, New York, dated 1920.
French private collection - Chang Yu was born in Nanchong in Sichuan province. His family owned the largest silk weaving mill in Sichuan, so he received the best education from tutors, which also included calligraphy and painting. In 1921, he went to Paris to study Western art and remained there, with interruptions of two years each in Berlin and New York, until his death in 1966. He entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he took courses in nude drawing, which was forbidden in China at the time. With his calligraphic training, he was able to capture the beauty of the human body with brush and ink in dynamically modulated contour lines. The present sheet is a fine example of these works. He also created depictions of flowers and landscapes and later switched to oil painting. Today, together with Xu Beihong, Yan Wenliang, Lin Fengmian and Liu Haisu, he is counted among the most prominent Chinese artists of the first generation to study in France.
