French private collection, by repute acquired in Piasa in 2010, by tradition from an old private collection assembled ca. 1980
Wu Zuoren came from Anhui and was a pupil of Xu Beihong (1895-1953). From 1930 to 1935, he studied Western painting in Paris and Brussels. After his return, he taught at the Central Academy of Art in Beijing from 1946. Until the 1970s, he worked equally in both Chinese and Chinese painting techniques. He then focussed on ink painting, working from his experiences in Tibet and the Gobi desert, mainly depicting camels, yaks and pandas. The present painting is a beautiful early example of his Öoil painting.
