Ink and light colours on paper, framed under glass. Signature of the artist: ‘Painted by Yuan Songnian in the summer of the dinghai year (1947).’ Two seals of the artist: ‘Calligraphy and Painting by Songnian’ (Songnian shuhua) and others.

Yuan Songnian came from Panyu in the Guangdong Province. He worked as a teacher at the Academy of Chinese Painting in Shanghai and was a member of the Chinese Artists' Association. He initially also studied Western painting with the aim of renewing Chinese painting, but later abandoned this and devoted himself entirely to traditional Chinese techniques. His landscape paintings are characterised by the expressive use of axe strokes, which he uses to model the rocks in an almost cubic manner.
