Gendun Drupa, the first Dalai Lama, was born into a nomadic family. He was born in 1391 and died in 1474 A.D. His indigenous name was Pema Dorjee. In 1411 he took a novice monastic vow at Narthang Monastery and received full monastic ordination. In 1416, he became a founder of the Gelugpa school and became a disciple and head disciple of Tsongkhapa. Legend has it that Gendun Drupa was a person of enormous scholarship who, according to his findings, wrote more than eight voluminous books on the Buddha's teachings and philosophy. He was not called the "Dalai Lama" as the title did not exist at the time. A few years after his death, he was proclaimed Dalai Lama. He is depicted in a splendid robe on a throne with several accompanying figures in a landscape, predominantly in blue and green colours. Silk brocade mount with protective cloth.
