Description:

China, on the frame back dated 1937
33 x 34 cm (51 x 50,3 cm R.)
View of steep shore at moonlight. Ink and colors on paper, mounted, framed and glazed. Signature by the artist: "Lin Fengmian". One seal of the artist: "Seal of Lin Fengmian" (Lin Fengmian yin). On the back of the frame a written note: "Lin Fong Ming, Shanghai 1937, Floriana Leto". An isolated fisher's hut is situated on a steep shore, a fisher boat lies beneath. The sky and sea are dark and the moon scarcely visible. The bright reflctions of the moonlight on the breakers in front of the shore and at the ragged rocks are clear reminiscences to Western painting style, while vigorous, expressive brushwork in best Chinese landscape tradition defined the rocks of the cliff. In the 1930s, Lin Fengmian's art was rejected by the government and he experienced an isolated and hard time. In 1937, he even had to leave Hangzhou during the Japanese invasion and finally found his way to Chongqing. The dark pictures of this time are an expression of these difficulties he then experienced.
Formerly from an old European private collection, assembled between 1960 and 1990 - Very minor traces of wear, good condition
