Alfred Wilhelm Bassermann came from a long-established Mannheim/Schwetzingen family and initially studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin. However, his passion was Italy and, above all, Dante, whose Divine Comedy he translated into German, as well as numerous studies and publications on the famous writer. His Dante collection is now kept in the University Library in Freiburg.
