The Virgin with Christ Child. Oil/poplar wood, verso old inventory notation "No. 54 F.B." and an old lacquer seal "British Consulate North Italy". Gilt Florentine leaf frame.
There are numerous variations on the composition of the painting of the Madonna and Child, in which the Child tenderly places his right arm around his mother's neck, nestles his bent left leg against her upper body and turns his head halfway towards the viewer. They can all be traced back to works by the great Fra Bartolomeo (1472-1517) or to an original model of his composition, possibly repeatedly copied during his lifetime from cardboard templates in panels and frescoes.
