100 x 175 cm
Mountain farm in an alpine landscape. Oil/canvas, signed lower right.
Private collection, Baden-Wurttemberg. With an expert report by Helmut Ascherbauer. Mulley's mountain paintings are visualisations of local proximity and awe-inspiring distance. The dissolution of the horizon represents this pictorial contrast between proximity and distance - because Mulley designs his landscapes beyond the edge of the picture. He places the viewer in the picture, forcing their gaze upwards at the same time.’
(Translated from Günther Moschig, Oskar Mulley, Alpine Landscape, Berenkamp, 1995)
In this painting, Mulley adheres to the compositional scheme he developed around 1935, which emphasises the exposed architecture in the foreground against the backdrop of a dramatic mountain backdrop that merges directly into the sky. The hanging geraniums, as splashes of red, are very typical of his painting and are used repeatedly in his numerous mountain farmyards alongside the colourful laundry found there.
