Description:

17th ct.
64 x 52 cm
Portrait of a Gentleman in a dark dress with a ruff, holding a rummer with wine. Oil/cradled panel.
Southern German private collection. The subject of this unusual portrait may be a member of the Amsterdam wine merchants' guild, which was founded in 1624. It is comparable to two portraits by Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy (c. 1590-1653), which also depict members of the wine merchants' guild: the portrait of Marten Rey, dated 1627, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-698) and the portrait of Dirck van Dans, dated 1626 (RKD archive no. 260653).
